It's all over the TV -- it's all over the internet, in magazines, and in newspapers. The only people who are unaware that the economy is in bad shape -- are those living under a rock. Lots of folks are losing their jobs.
For the legal profession and the support staff who work in that profession -- there's good news and there's bad news. The good news first. Jessica Cheam, in an article in The Straits Times, notes the legal profession is still seeing strong demand. In particular, there will be a stronger call for insolvency and bankruptcy lawyers. Then there's the bad news. She also said that jobs considered to be support roles, or non-essential, may be among the first to go. Holy cow! That's us!
What are some of the ways to hold on to your job in these tough times? Perhaps an attitude adjustment...
Stay on top of your industry. Educate yourself. If you're given the opportunity to learn new things that relate to your job, take it. Take care of yourself and stay healthy.
Be on time. Don't abuse sick or leave time if you get those benefits. If the boss asks you to work longer hours, say yes, if you can. Put on your happy face while you're at work -- don't be cranky. Keep your head down, your eyes on the road, and don't be a complainer.
One more thing ... If you're worried about losing your job, there's no better time to give yourself an honest assessment. Have you developed some habits or attitudes that could get you in trouble? Are you coasting through the day or are you giving it your best? Are you the type of person that you'd hire? If you can do better -- do it. As Ebenezer Scrooge found out, it's never too late to change.
